How 3-D CAD Technology Works

The global 3-D CAD market has grown to over $8 billion. The accuracy and flexibility of this technology is a key part of why it’s used for so many important purposes. Even the best 2-D drawings are very limited by the amount of detail they can show. Because computer-aided design (CAD) doesn’t have those limitations, it can create highly realistic 3-D models.

A 3-D model will reflect the exact elements of a design. An engineer with CAD experience can easily modify these elements to meet specific needs. This is one of the many reasons why we use this technology to model every scissor lift we build.

5 Benefits of Modeling with 3-D CAD Technology

We have a history that dates back to 1934. Over the last eight decades, we’ve continued to innovate with improved processes and new technology. One example is our use of 3-D CAD technology. Here are five ways our 3-D modeling benefits customers like you:

1. Lots of Available Features

A hydraulic scissor lift can be manual, electric, battery, or air powered. A lift can include removable standoffs, tooling mounts, fork pockets, and other features. 3-D modeling makes it easy to explore these different features and choose the ones that work best for your needs.

2. Precise Modifications and Customizations

We have experience working with small fabrication shops, national defense contractors, and everyone in between. We know just how vital it is for modifications and customizations to be precise. Through our use of 3-D CAD technology, we can ensure the lift we build meets your exact specifications.

3. Wide Capacity Range

Some lifts only need to support a few hundred pounds. Others need to safely support tens of thousands of pounds. Our 3-D modeling process gives you the freedom to choose any lift capacity from 100 to 40,000 pounds.

4. Prompt Turnaround

We pride ourselves on expert craftsmanship, but we also understand the importance of delivery schedules. Through our use of CAD software, we’re able to provide custom manufacturing while simultaneously ensuring each stage in the process moves along without delays.

5. Easy Collaboration

When you invest in a lift, you deserve to get exactly what you need. While some lift providers will try to force a cookie-cutter solution on you, Lange Lift manufactures one-of-a-kind lifts. Our engineers will work directly with you from concept to production.

The collaborative approach that 3-D modeling enables makes it easy to design the perfect lift.

Understanding How a Hydraulic Scissor Lift Table Works

If you’ve ever been in an industrial setting, you’ve seen or worked with a hydraulic scissor lift table.

The lift table is one of the most common pieces of industrial equipment. When using it, most people don’t give much thought to how it works, but understanding the mechanics behind it will make you safer.

Five Essential Parts Of The Hydraulic Scissor Lift Table

Before diving into the operation side, let’s look at the parts that make up the lift:

The Platform

The top of the table, where you place items, is the platform. It is typically 1/4″ steel. There isn’t a standard size for scissor lift table platforms: how large they are depends on the needs of the job site.

Base

The base of the table is the structural foundation of the unit. It has tracks which guide the rollers at the bottom of the legs. The base’s size depends on the size and capacity of the platform.

Scissor Legs

These legs allow the hydraulic scissor lift table to reach its height. They sit between the base of the platform and come in different varieties depending on the intended use of the unit.

Cylinders

These high-pressure hydraulic cylinders are what raise and lower the platform. There are normally 1 to 4 cylinders on each unit.

Motor

Most lifts have a self-contained electric motor that is powered by a high-pressure air compressor. There are a few models with a remote power pack on the side of the unit, however.

How These Parts Work Together

As the motor pushes oil into the ram cylinder, the hydraulic scissor lift table rises. Once raised, the lift stays in place due to a check valve that keeps the oil in the hydraulic cylinder. The lift lowers when oil is released slowly from the cylinder. The check valve determines the speed of fluid release, and thus the speed of descent. Only a professional should attempt to alter the valve.

If a lift has a higher travel and weight capacity, it will rise slower. Some companies will try to speed up their lift speed by using a motor with higher horsepower. Use this solution with caution, however, as a higher HP engine will cause increased wear on the structure, lowering the life of the lift. In fact, a 1 HP increase could cut the life of the hydraulic scissor lift table by 33%. Another way to increase the speed is a motor with higher voltage. More volts will lift quicker, but also cost more.

It is important to remember that no one should ever attempt to raise the scissor lift higher than recommended. Many accidents happen each year due to non-compliance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

As with all pieces of equipment, there is always a trade-off. For the best long-term financial results, using the lift as intended without alterations is usually the best option.

5 Need-to-Know Tips for Scissor Lift Safety

According to an article published by the Laborer’s Health and Safety fund, scissor lifts and other aerial lifts are one of the most common reasons for workplace injuries.

Like any business owner or manager, you want to keep your workers safe and avoid taking huge financial hits from worker’s compensation payouts. That’s why, to keep everything functioning smoothly and safely within your manufacturing and industrial company, you need to understand scissor lift safety.

Read on to learn five invaluable tips.

1. Perform Routine Maintenance

We know it can be frustrating to have to break up your work or production flow in order to inspect your equipment. However, it’s one of the most important safety steps you can take. Make sure you routinely test your guardrails, inspect the workplace environment, and test your workers’ knowledge of safety regulations.

2. Focus On Positioning

There are countless horror stories out there about workers who have been crushed to death by machinery or who have been electrocuted. Don’t let your employees become the next newspaper headline.

Instead, make sure your employees know how to position their lifts correctly. This means the lift needs to be a minimum of twelve feet from any power lines. You should also eliminate any overhead wires. (To be safe, nothing should be hanging over the lift.) Also, make sure you put down ground guides so that everyone is aware of where the lift is in their work environment.

3. Ensure Your Lift Is Stable

If your lift falls over, you and your workers are in serious trouble. Keep it stable by keeping the lift a good distance away from other equipment. Make sure the ground you place your lift on is solid too. That means you’ll need to check for any holes in the floor.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the manufacturer instructions, and always obey the limits on both weight and height set by the manufacturer.

4. Get Serious About Fall Protection

Preventing worker falls is a huge part of scissor lift safety. This means you’ll need to install guardrails to protect the scissor lift operators. Although body harnesses aren’t required, they may be a good idea. Also, instruct your workers to stand on the platform only and to never balance on the guardrails.

5. Train Your Employees To Ensure Scissor Lift Safety

Of course, the most important thing you can do in order to prevent accidents is to properly train your employees. This means you’ll need to conduct ongoing training, and perhaps even unannounced spot checks to make sure everything is as it should be.

When you train your operators, make sure you discuss:

  • The basics of handling the scissor lift
  • How to spot hazards in the workplace
  • How to identify when the lift needs repairs
  • Weight limits

This will help you to avoid accidents.

Bonus Tip 6: Buy Quality Equipment

Of course, the first step in scissor lift safety is to invest in high-quality equipment. Buying inferior equipment can increase the likelihood of equipment-related accidents. As such, your lift should be manufactured by an experienced company that can customize your equipment to your specific needs.

5 Things to Consider When Purchasing Scissor Lift Tables

Do you have a business that involves a lot of loading, unloading, and various production tasks?

If so, it’s time to consider investing in scissor lift tables. A scissor lift table is a mechanical device that is used to bring the load to a more ergonomic position, therefore increasing both the safety and the efficiency of your workday. These tables reduce the need for constant and repetitive bending, reaching, and lifting that can all be very taxing on the body.

A scissor lift will help relieve your workers from back-breaking work and also ensure that your goods don’t get damaged. But, picking out the right scissor lift table for your business isn’t always easy. There are an overwhelming amount of choices, and choosing a table that will best suit the needs of your business can be a daunting task.

In this article, we’ll go over the top five things you need to consider when purchasing scissor lift tables.

1. Intended Use

Above all else, a scissor lift table should be selected based on its intended use. The use will help determine the capacity of the lift, the style, and any extra features that might be needed.

Before you start shopping, it’s important to examine and analyze your needs so you can figure out the exact intended use for it. Make a list of your needs and the results you expect from the lift, and then use this to guide you for other considerations.

2. Mobility

Decide whether you are going to use the scissor lift table in a fixed location or if it needs to be mobile. Things to keep in mind include:

  • Assembly and production lines would require one that can be set in a fixed location, whereas construction and maintenance work would require one that is mobile.
  • If you need it to be mobile, you’ll want to look into lift tables that can be powered by battery or gas, as some spots may not have electricity available.

3. Load

Another factor you need to take into consideration is the workload you need the lift to hold. Typically, a lift with more capacity is going to be more expensive. Therefore, if you have large loads that need to be moved, budget options may not be available to you.

4. Safety Features

Safety is perhaps the most important consideration when buying a scissor lift table. The safety of you and your employees should always be of utmost priority.

When shopping for a lift, safety features such as lanyards, emergency buttons, and safety bars should all be taken into consideration. These safety features and others can help decrease accidents, which will increase efficiency and save your business time and money.

5. Height

There are two aspects in regards to height that need to be considered when buying a lift:

  • First, you need to consider the maximum height of the loads you need to transport. Lifts can be used to move loads to a portion of this height without any issue.
  • You also need to consider the height of the lift when it’s collapsed, as it may need to be able to fit through a doorway or some other shorter structure.

How to Choose the Perfect Scissor Lift for Your Project

As you’ve probably noticed, scaffolding has been fading away into history. Scissor lifts are quickly becoming the preferred choice for professionals who do a lot of high-elevation work.

Scissor lifts are more cost-effective and save time. If you’ve ever spent an entire day setting up scaffolding, then another day taking it down, you know how much production time is lost. A scissor lift also provides greater reach and weight capacities.

But how do you choose the right lift for your job? From the push-around models to the mighty diesels, there are many options.

In this article, we’ll cover the different lifts available for different occasions. The right one for you is just around the corner.

Now, let’s talk scissor lifts.

Overview

A scissor lift comes in many sizes and shapes. The most common are designed to lift materials and workers to heights that ladders can’t safely reach. They also come in smaller sizes for uses like lifting pallets or other heavy objects to lower heights.

Depending on the work you need to get done, you can find lifts that range in lift height and power.

Let’s take a look a few specific types.

Low-Level Lift

These work great when used in indoor workspaces such as garages, hangers, and warehouses. They’ll typically reach heights between 20-25 feet and are powered by an electric motor or air. They’re also light and designed with smooth wheels to help reduce stress on indoor flooring.

High-Level Lift

High-level scissor lifts reach heights you can’t get to on low-level models. They’ll reach over 90 feet high, which can be needed on high, outdoor jobs. Some are electric powered. Others are gas or air powered. The option you choose will depend on your specific work environment.

Outdoor Lift

In reality, any lift can be used outdoors. However, there are some specific design features that make these lifts more suited for outdoor work. Lifts designated for use outdoors are typically high-level lifts that access electric wires and telephone wires.

They boast robust pneumatic tires that can handle a rough outdoor terrain, and because they’re powered by a gas or diesel engine, outdoor lifts aren’t restricted by an electrical connection or short battery life.

Dock Lift

These are the little cousin to a traditional scissor lift. They still use the scissor design to move, but they’re much smaller and for lighter loads. They allow for quick and easy loading and unloading of bulky items.

Dock lifts are designed to be extremely mobile and come in a wide array of designs.

When you need a lift to provide moving power for heavy loads from the warehouse floor to a trailer truck bed, dock lifts are the way to go.
